What is a therapy session like?

A standard session is 50-55 minutes long. In our first session, we will go over your history. This typically includes discussing what prompted you to seek out therapy, your health history, relationships, interests, and family. We will also discuss your goals and plan for treatment. This is a great time to talk about what your expectations for therapy are, and any questions you may have about working together. I typically like to see clients weekly for the first few sessions, and then you can let me know what frequency feels best for you.

Sessions are typically client-directed, which just means I will defer to you to share what concern or issue you would like to discuss. However, some therapies are more structured, like EMDR and CBT, and we may have things to follow up on from one session to the next. Therapy can uncover difficult emotions, and it’s normal to feel upset during or after sessions. As you grow more comfortable with these feelings, this should begin to subside. This time is for you and we will spend it processing at your pace. You can always let me know if there is a topic you are not ready to discuss.
